Barred Rocks
Barred Rocks are similar looking to the old Dominicker breed. Barred Rocks are for raising to be eaten and are famous for their large brown eggs. They are good for eating due to their large size and are good for egg laying since they lay large brown eggs and can lay almost daily. We recommend Silkies if wanting just a pet, but Barred Rocks can make good pets too. We are looking forward to this summer when they start laying so we can raise and sell their chicks.
Guineas
We have Guineas. Guineas are good for gardens because they eat the harmful bugs, that could ruin crops, without destroying the crops. They also eat ticks.
Silkies
Silkies make great pets. They are a bantam breed, so they are small. They are also very compassionate. They are not good for eating due to their size and they have blue meat. They are also not very good egg layers, since they don't lay daily and they produce very small eggs. They are a cute and fun breed to have. They have a large variety of colors.
Sexing Chicks
I have been asked multiple times, how can you tell the difference between the male and female silkie chicks? Well, you cant tell until they are about a month old. Some experts are able to feel them within the first 24 hours to tell if they are male or female, but if you hatch yours or buy them straight run, you dont know. We bought ours straight run. Whenever they are around one month old, look for the comb. Its a scrunched up thing on their beak/head. On light chicks, it's usually pink, but on the dark chicks, it can be black. As you can tell in the picture, the white chick to the right is a rooster, the one to the left is a hen. We have only tried this on silkies, but I'm sure the same rules apply to other chicks
